The high-tech artificial joints, made of steel and hard plastic, are wonders of engineering, but are also one of the most expensive aspects of the surgery. All of the joints are supplied by U.S. manu- facturers. “It’s a shame, because a Jot of our health dollars are tied up in these. Canada needs more input,” says Beauchamp, Born and raised in Nelson, B.C., Dr. Beauchamp attended the med- ical school at the University of British Columbia and then went on to study orthopedics at Vancouver General Hospital. He received fur- ther training at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida. Pleased as he is with the success of the surgical treatment of ar- thritis, Beauchamp sees room for improvement, such as a shorter waiting period for the operations, and an even greater success rate. “And of couse, we hope that research will ultimately result in a cure for many types of arthritis,"’ he adds. Some 320,000 people in British Columbia and the Yukon, one in seven, suffer, from arthritis, About 3,500 of them are children under 16, The Arthritis Society is Canada’s only non-profit organization devoted solely to funding and promoting arthritis research, patient care and public and professional education. Arthritis research is expensive and there is no government support. You can help the Arthritis Society by making a donation to a canvasser during September or by sending a gift by mail or including a bequest in your will.
