THREE-BILLION-DOLLAR BABY: Ford plans to “buy”
a car — for $3 billion. By contrast. this car promises to be a
world leader in small, economy Cars.

Ford president Philip Caldwell said his company, which
introduced the Model T, the industry's first “world car,” will
spend some $3 billion on project Erika, Ford's next global
offering program.

The car will feature front-wheel-drive and be built in the
U.S. and Europe to be sold by other Ford subsidiaries
throughout the world. The new subcompact will get close to
10 miles per gallon more than its predecessors, Ford Pinto
and Escort. It will also have “significant improvements in
interior space, trunk room and handling,” Caldwell said.

CRUISING DOWN THE RIVER: I don't think Howard
Singer really needs to signal, as he is domg above, as he
cruises down the Ohio River to Cincinnati. I imagine most
boats and other river traffic would give him plenty of room,
for fear of sending a wave up that fast foot of door and into

ROLL IN THOSE RADIALS: Radials are urelessty taking
over the market (sorry about that).

They've been the dominant tire in Western Europe for
more than 10 years “and now outsell other kinds of auto
tires in the U.S., Canada, Asia and Africa and are closing in
on leadership in Latin America.” according to Robert
Loughridge, director of economic and strategic planning for
Goodyear Tire & Rubber.

He said a Goodyear survey of international tre markets
showed

* In Camada, 80 per cent of the tres for new cars this
year will be radials. The figure will jump another four per
cent by 1982.

* Bias-ply tires have nearly disappeared in Western
Europe. This year, car makers there will install radials on
every new auto they make. And within two years, 95 of

every 100 replacement auto tires sold in Western Europe
will be a radial.

* In Asia and Africa, radials’ share of the total! auto tre
market — those on new cars and those sold to replace worn
tires — will reach 63 per cent this year. In Malaysia, radials
already account for more than 80 per cent of the total auto-
ture market

* Although the radial has not caught on as quickly in
Latin America, the tire will be the pacesetter there by the
mid-80s. Already the use of radials has more than doubled
in Mexico in the past five years and will reach 70 per cent
of the total market by 1982.

* In the U.S., the radial wil! overtake bias tires this year,
capturing 56 per cent of the combined new-car and
replacement total. By 1984, 90 per cent of all new U.S. car
ures will be radial while the replacement share will hit 70
per cent. Bias-ply and bias-belted. the market leaders of the
early “70s, will share the remainder.
