4 - Wednesday, October 28, 1987 - North Shore News WV ferry building to be moved THE OLD ferry building in West Vancouver, a reminder of the days when the North Shore was accessi- ble only by boat, is to be moved a .few yards to the northwest at a cost of $9,615, The object of great controversy concerning its worthiness as an ob- ject of restoration, the historic but dilapidated building must be mov- ed to accommodate work under- way on the beach at Ambleside. West Vancouver District Council agreed to move the building at last place for museum disp!zy. “It’s going to be rzaily cute,”’ he said. opportunity to view pictures of what the old building will look like when it is renovated and becomes a Bob Hunter ® strictly personal @ BETWEEN visiting a lawyer and dealing with the bureaucracy to get my driver’s licence renewed, I stopped in at my dentist’s the other day, shared a few giggles, got fixed up, and didn’t think twice about meeting my wife * installation of natural 9 gas as fireplaces {rom Firehearth * sand pan type - driftwood or oak * highest quality workmanship (fully guaranteed) for a couple of pints after work. The dentist made a joke about my teeth having been patched and re-patched. | told him: “‘You should see what they did to my brain.” We laughed some more and | then he bent to the task of per- forming a miraculous act of bone-sculpting in the middle of my head -- without me going out of my mind from pain. U honestly did not feel so much as a twinge at any point in the process, except later that evening when the freezing came out and my jawbone felt a bit sore at the joint when I vawned. That was it! And I am about as sensitive to pain as a human being can be. This time I took it for granted that I would not emerge from the dentist’s office in a shell-shocked state, my tormented nervous system coiling and uncoiling. This is because my last half- dozen visits to a dentist have. been almost pleasant. } I was casual. Prompt — but f not uptight. You could easily have mistaken me for aman. with no fear. v It is the measure ‘of how far dentistry has advanced that a quivering jelly-limbed coward like me can march confidently in- to the dentist’s office and climb into the chair —- without crying or soiling myseif! Anybody who can re-program | me like that knows. his stuff. | These folks are winners, maybe the technd-heroes of all time. Like so many of the things we take for granted —. automobiles, television, drug stores — the high science of dentistry. ‘deserves more reverence that it gets. Just in my lifetime, it has gone from a crude and barbaric hor- ror-show .to a: sweet, almost beatific routine. ; As a nominee for the greatest achievement in human history, I solemnly submit the proud and magnificent practice of Painless Dentistry. Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it: for the modern den- tist! ‘ it is a job that is fraught with j stress. I have been told by a den- tist that the suicide rate among his colleagues is ‘‘the highest of any profession.’’ Dental students are warned that one in 40 of them will commit suicide before retiring. The fundamental difference { between a dentist and a doctor is that the doctor mostly gets to have his: patients rendered un- conscious before operating, whereas’ the dentist, using only local anesthesia, runs the risk every moment of having himself de-fingered by a set of stubby but dangerous Jaws. It should be no surprise, then, that it was dentists, not doctors, who, in general, pioneered anesthetics back in the early part of che century. God bless them! Oh, God bless them! If you can’t achieve out-and- out physical pleasure at any given moment, the next best thing is definitely painlessness, as I see it. There is, of course, another measure of the success of modern dentistry, apart from my craven aversion to pain. It is the fact that in the industrialized coun- tries, toothlessness has almost ‘been eliminated in middle-aged adults. Moreover, these same people stand a very good chance of hanging on to their surviving teeth for life, since denta! strate- gy nowadays is to fight for every tooth as though it were Gibraltar. Nothing less than a revolution ;has occurred, right here in our ‘mouths, between gum and palate. In addition to perfecting a pain-free way of repairing teeth, dentists have successfully im- plemented preventative programs ranging from fluoridation to bet- ter education and the habit of frequent visits, with the startling result that — unlike doctors — dentists are putting themselves out of business. As a health science, dentistry is simply so successful that there has been a sharp decline in tooth decay among children. New techniques mean that teeth are kept longer, and in better shape. Human history until new has been a sorry plague of toothaches that frequently killed their vic- tims unless they were able to en- dure unholy suffering to have in- fected teeth removed. In our time — our very recent time — dentists are diversifying into a host of lovely specialities, becoming prosthodontists, paedontists, oral pathologists, periodontists, oral radiologists, or endontists, to mention a few, Each speciality means they get better at what they do. I love it. And, seriously, a toast to den- tists. The Tooth Fairy is the one myth that turned out to be true. WE'VE MOVE! Ald. Mark Sager said the cost of possible future restoration of the ferry building would be about $95,000. “Hopefully, most of this will come from the provincial Heritage Fund,’’ he added. Ald. Gordon Rowntree was against the decision to move the building. “This should be tabled until we know the extent of the heritage funding,” he said. “The building has to be moved, whether it’s renovated or not,’’ put in Mayor Don Lanskail.
