“ L ES 3 i £ 48 - Sunday, June 14, 1987 — North Shore News Sports - TWO-DAY RACE Westview riders ro! THE 15 Westview Cycle/Ron Zalko Bicycle Racing Club riders who competed at the the June 6 and 7 Summerland Action Festival came back with more than sun- - burns, The two-day stae< race included a road race and individual time trial on Saturday and a criterion (circuit race) on Sunday. Besides competing for money and merchandise, riders from the U.S. and Canada were also aiming _to place in the top five positions overall. The top five finishers in each category would automatically be upgraded to the next higher cate- gory, which means more to most amateur riders than money or prizes. Saturday’s race had. two major challenges for the racers besides the competition from each other: sneer heat and a monstrous hill. The outstanding race of this event was the senior men’s Cate- gory Four race, in which com- petitors had to race around the 17-kilometre course and up the hill five times for a total of 85 kilometres. Westview’s John Barber crossed the line first in the 45-rider field, with teammates Gord. Moreside and Dave Hicks at his elbows. Category Five rider Brad Wat- tam rode the club colors to a re- spectable fifth-place finish after 51 kilometres, while Categcry Three rider Les Akins finished seventh in his 102-kilometre event. That evening, after the riders had taken a few hours to recuper- ate, racing continued with individ- ual sprints up 4 2.6-kilometre hill with a slope similar to Mount Seymour’s. Moreside set the third fastest time in Category Four and thereby assured himself of a top five overall placing and an upgrading into Category Three. Westview’s Greg Hayes, also a Cateogry Four rider, broke his handle bars in half while warming up for the time trial and had to use a bike borrowed from teammate Akins. Brad Wattum =gain placed fifth in Category Five on the hill, while Allen Bogetti finished fifth in the veterans’ (over 35) class. Both ride for Westview. On Sunday, Wattum again finished the high-speed criterion, held around one city block in Summer v'‘ball gets bouncing THE B.C.: Volleyhall Association will be running various outdoor leagues and beach tournaments througnout the summer.
