In 1977. with financial backing he wrote and directed the very autobiographical film, ‘The Boss’ Son’’, which launched his feature film career and put his name on the screen at several film festivals where it won awards. © ’ “Tt was my first real full- length film, out in the real world having to raise money and pay peopie,’’ laughed Roth. The basis for the script came from his own life ex- pesiences within his family. “TI grew up in a middle-class Jewish family and my father was a businessman but because my father was a (carpet) manufacturer, I was always in contact with work- ing-class people. ” The film is based on the story. of a young business- school graduate coming into his father’s factory, cocky enough to take over and start at the top. The social conscience theme in Boss’ Son found its way into Roth's third film, “Circle of Power,”’ which he was hired to direct: for An- thony Quinn, Circle of Power is based on a true story of a corpora- tion that brainwashed its ex- ecutives, and won Roth a Best Director Award at the Belgium Film Festival. “IT was sort of hesitant, probably rightfully, looking back, about this film but it was also very intriguing stuff, about why people allow themselves to be seduced.”’ Roth has certainly not been branded a commercial film maker by Hollywood. “None of his movies have been made with the sole aim of making money, he claims. ‘Hollywood doesn’t judge you by what your themes are but by how commercial your films are," he said. ‘‘None of my films are exploitation films. In the first two, there was no sex, violence, or ac- tion. Circle of Power is a brutal film but it is psychologically brutal. They were all pictures made with less than a focus on the box office.’’ As an independent writer, Roth has also worked in TV, writing scripts to pay the bills, but preferring to use film to reach his audience. This fal! however, a TV pilot called ‘The Insiders'’, on the exploits of an undercover journalist will see Roth pounding out scripts for the tube, as the series is his cre- ation. Looking at his future in film he comments, ‘‘it seems like ‘there is a pattern developing. | do one really personal film, then.] do one really political film. { guess I’m due for a political one.” DR.
