CANADAI+5 OVER SPORTS POOL Kuehn sues Canada AMERICAN BASEBALL commissioner Bowie Kuehn has taken his fight against the planned federal sports pool to the courts. Kuehn filed suit in Quebec Superior Court Wednesday seeking an in- junction against the sports pool. The federal has proposed mounting the government national sports pool, which would require participants to pick the winners in a series of sporting events to win cash prizes, in attempts to raise money for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and to get around an agreement signed by the provinces and the former Conservative government of Joe Clark that gives control over lotteries to the provinces. Kuehn is fighting the lot- tery on the grounds that it would damage the image of baseball, one of the sports that would be used, by opening the game to gambling. Ironically, the baseball com: ussioner’s office was first set up in the 1920s after the sport was rocked by a series of betting scandals. Kuehn, in launching the suit, also said the federal government’s sports pool plans might have an adverse affect on Vancouver’s bid for a major league franchise.
