HOUSING 150 SENIORS Lodge meets needs of aging By CAROLINE JACKSON ONLY FIVE MONTHS old, Cedarview Lodge in Lynn Valley, is already filled to capacity with 150 senior residents. Opened by Premier W.R. Bennett in March, it is the largest and most advanc- ed intermediate care facility in the province. Originally, it was the brainchild of several North Shore organizations - the Kiwanis Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Army, Navy and Air Force FACIAL ELECTROLYSIS REMOVE TRON WAXING BODY MASSAGE MAKEUP ALL theater et aes Eder fronempint oat SEROUR ISH EAST 140H STREE DE NOKTH VANCOUVER 980-8701 Veterans, West Vancouver United Church and W. Lodge Administrator, Cecil Scott is really pleased with the way things are go- ing: ‘‘I believe in encouraging residents to be as indepen- dent as possible. Life in here should parallel as much as possible that at home. Our emphasis is on the psycho- social well-being of the Clarins & [or Perrreanert individual. ‘*Most people can manage to function here with just an average of 45 minutes per day of personal individual atten- tion. This may take the form of supervising the admini- stration of medication for a diabetic or help with a bath. A few residents, however, suffer from premature senili- ty and need more care. We have three shifts a day with team leaders and = coor- dinators and there is always a minimum of one R.N. per shift. They were all hand picked and we hired quite a few long term care students from Capilano College.’’ The lodge is a bright airy place and a far cry from the old institutional look. Staff members do not wear uniforms and impart a true feeling of caring towards the residents. A tuck shop which is popular with the students of adjacent Eastview Elemen- tary School is run by the residents as is their own hbrary. All rooms are private and most residents come and go as they please whether be 10 shop, to work or to go away on vacation with their family. Recreational ac- tivities include everything from indoor darts to outdoor horse-shoes. While the waiting list for acceptance into the Lodge ts three and a half years, Scott maintains this is not a true Picture as the waiting penod can be changed according to needs. Applications can be made through the Long Term Care Office at the North Shore Health Unit. In event of such a request, a member of the health team visits with the potennal resident and relatives in order that an assessment can be made. IN THE RON AN- DREWS fitness centre, Glen Orris lifts weights as part of his fitness pro- gram. The North Van Recreation Commission offers dozens of fitness classes, as weil as their regular swimming and health club facilities. Call 929-7314 for more infor- mation about Ron An- drews Pool.
