A7 - Wednesday, December 1, 1982 - North Shore News cho OPEN LETTER TO NORTH VAN SCHOOL BOARD The Ad Hoc Committee on Day Care formed in the fall of ’81. As professionals and community volunteers involvéd with services to children and families we are concemed with the issues of quality day care services for North Shore children. At a recent meeting, concern was expressed about the impact of your decision to charge rent to outside groups who use school facilities. Since many day care centres, pre- schools and out-of-school programs operate in schools, a sub-committee was struck to look at possible im- existing child care services. We are concerned. Increased unemployment on the North Shore has _day care resulted in an increase in the number of families using day care facilities who qualify for subsidy. That subsidy does not cover the actual operating costs. As people are laid off and remain home, vacancies. have increased in all child care facilities. These two realities coupled with in- flation are causing financial problems for centres. With your decision to charge rent, closures are inevitable. If centres raise their fees to meet your rental requirements, we're not sure how families will respond. They may simply withdraw the child(ren) or place them in inadequate and un- supervised settings. One parent may be forced to quit ki ide the } day care costs exceed the benefits. For those centres able to meet the added costs, the Thanks from McGuire Blackburn Dear Editor: I wish to take this op- portunity to thank ail my supporters and friends for their contribution and assistance to my campaign in the District of North Van- couver elections. Your decision has created a domino effect - centres closing, increased unem- ployment and decreased child care services. In reviewing your rental proposal, centres in schools expressed concern with items#1 regarding absorbing custodial costs and #3 fees payable in advance.
