McGeer creates CGN course

Minister Pat McGeer
strengthened his car con-
version program last week
with the creation of a
training program to certify
mechanics for converting
cars to run on compressed
natural gas (CNG).

Pacific Vocational In-
stitute will operate the
program at its Burnaby
campus, charging students
$300 for the five day course.

“This new training

program follows up on the
announcement in the
provincial budget that a $200
grant will be made to any
individual converting his
vehicle to run on natural gas
and that road tax will not
apply to this clean Canadian
fuel,” McGeer said.

“We are now putting
policies and programs in
place to back up our ideas.”

McGeer said the federal
government has introduced
a demonstration program for

Quebec government to name
a provincial highway after

The course covers the
basic safety aspect of natural
gas and the safety
regulations regarding the
installation of components,’
the components themselves,
and proper tune-up for both
fuels -- CNG and gasoline.

the Energy Development
Agency, at 873-3887.

The course was designed
by PVI’s Gino Simeon with
Gary Walton from the B.C.
Institute of Technology.
Gary Fargray, from the New
Zealand energy department,
acted as consultant.

Fargray was instrumental
in developing the course
used to train mechanics in
his country where, by 1985,
it is anticipated 150,000
vehicles will be operating on
methane.
