This year was the first time stu- dents from Collingwood School in West Vancouver and students from Highlands Community School in North Vancouver participated in a science fair. Students from both schools submitted individual science pro- jects and some students par- ticipated in class projects. Each fair attracted about 600 guests. ‘*Logistically it was a nightmare,’’ said David Laugharne, head of the science department at Collingwood School. LOTS OF FUN “J had to co-ordinate 308 pro- jects and four class projects but it was a lot of fun.”’ John Calder, Highlands School principal, said 270 students took part in its school fair, which was organized as a one-day exhibition. The Collingwood School fair, with the help of 40 judges, award- ed first, second and third-place prizes from grades three to nine. Categories included biology, physics, earth sciences and chemis- try. At Highlands School grade- seven student David Lee’s com- puterized robot was singled out and another grade-seven student, Brian Hughs, was praised by teachers for his energy project, which tested the life of batteries. Calder said volcano and dinosaur projects appealed to many students but equally popu- CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER NOTICE 1986 WATER AND SEWER RATES By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter lar, he said, were the following projects; a working model of a gondola, home instruments to demonstrate sound, the dissection of a salmon and a solar power project. VOLCANOES, DINOSAURS “The complexity (of projects) was really surprising,’ said Calder. “‘A lot of intensive work had gone into the projects. “I would say students split the work 50—50 betweeen working at home and at school. In some cases the families really took on the pro- ject." Laugharne agreed that the in- volvement of families in science projects was one of the beneficial outcomes of Collingwood’s fair. “‘The students get to work with the parents, which sometimes is quite unique,” he said. BENEFITS Laugharne said other student benefits are investigating topics not normally covered on the school's curriculum and developing research skills. “The science fair really prods them. Even if their experiment failed they can still turn around and say they’ve learned a_par- ticular way didn’t work,’’ he said.
