é entertainment © automotive Mixed success at Westwood for new NS racing team Driving season winding down A new North Shore racing team made its professional racing debut at Westwood this past weekend in the CRC Trans-Am Challenge event. Bob Barg and Frank Quigg of North Vancouver drove their Jeff's Hi- Performance Auto Repairs Camaro to a 12th place finish in the feature event as well as an early exit from the closed wheel event. Since it was the first time they have used the car ina professional event the team decided to play mt cool and concentrate on being reliable Bob Barg placed 11 twelve on a grid of twenty. three which consisted mostly of Corvettes but also had a few Porsches and Datsun’s mixed in to make for a very good race Pnor to the start of the race the leam discovered a broken suspension joint that had to be hurnedly welded up and that done — they discovered a broken alternator Connection that could casily cost them the trace As the other cars were ining upon the grad this was temporarily repaired and Bary drove the cat out pustin time The big” thundering machines provided an ex- cellent show of driving skill to the fans as they blasted their way around West- wood's 1.8 mile track. Bob Barg held his ground in the race, taking tt easy on the car, trying to ensure a finish. A rear end oil seal leak developed about half way through the race though it caused few problems, more importantly the brakes were beginning to fade which meant Barg had to slow down even more as the race progressed At the end he brought wo ohome ino twelfth having tuna good race In the closed wheel event Frank Quigg drove the cas ™ a ~ which now looked a little tired after having run the 1'% hour Trans-Am race. At the start he jumped into the lead ahead of a sports racing car who was hard on his heels By turn two however, Quigg’s cxuberance with the already fading brakes proved to be too much and he went in loo fast, dropping a wheel in the dirt. The sports racer. thinking the Camaro was going off the track, tned to ap through on the inside, only to be bashed in the back end alter Quiggs car shot back across the track [he Camaro limped around to the pits but had to retre on the spot with a broken onl cooler hone "9 HOCKEY ACTION has returned to the North Shore as the NorWes Caps took on the North Shore Winter Club Flames in a pre-season game at the North Van Rec Centre. Caps, the official farm team of the New West Bruins were decisive winners over the less experienced players from the Winter Club.
