Dear +. Speck: ; Tam a concerned taxpayer of the. Deep Cove area. While ‘my children are no longer -in school,. I have maintained“ my. interest: in the school system, and’am - particularly interested in the to demolish: : the. Burrard View. ‘Elementary - School and° ‘build- a - new school in its place.. My property adjoins the school site, and I am very interested in this matter. _ On June 26 T-went to the: School Board. to arrange a. private meeting with some parents. I felt that teachers and administrators should not be present because of © the possibility of timidation of the parents. The ‘meeting was set for October 11: The meeting was turned, without my knowledge into a public , meeting. When we déclined | ‘to attend insisting on a. meeting between the trustees and the parents as previously arranged, the Board informed us that they ‘don’t grant private meetings’. This was at- tributed to a lack of correct terminology on my part. A. ‘presentation held ‘by - people lobbying for the new | - school . was prefaced by a memo saying ‘that I can- Education: far more ine: ‘celled the previous meeting, 7 when in fact that was not true. - My position is that it would be much cheaper and ,entirely satisfactory to, upgrade that school if it is necessary. The other side maintains that the school is not conducive to good learning: 1 think that the problem is’ not with the school building but -with the teachers. “I don't think that the teachers and principals should be lobbying for a new school. There are teachers ined up. for teaching jobs now. If they don’t tike . than dollars and cents Dear Editor: : Re: School Trustee Sarsfield’s letter of March 14 to your paper, I would like to correct him on at least one point he made, and comment ' on several others. First, at the Community School Workshop held at Boundary Community School on January_13 of this year, _ Mr. Sarsfield; in front of _ approximately 50 people, tanging from concerned parents and residents to senior school administrators, stated he was in favor of the Community School concept in School District 44. That his remarks that day obviously belie ‘his' many subsequent statements, has been noted by more than a few North Van parents. Secondly,. Mr. Sarsfield fails to point out that, while the North: Van Operating Cost/Pupil ratio is marginally higher than any other school district in the Lower Mainland, the schools in. North Van have con- sistently been rated among the -highest in the entire country. This fact was pointed out by Trustee Lynas at the January 13 workshop. ‘Thirdly, Mr. Sarsfield and Mr. Craig seem to think their cost accounting/‘*‘bottom line’’ mentality is the answer to administering a school budget. This narrow attitude fails to recognize the simple fact that a higher quality teaching at that school, let's) get a teacher who doesn't mind teaching there. A young mother in our area saw a drawing by her child which was a picture of “Our Neighborhood’. In the centre of the picture was a drawing of what the child said was ‘our new school’. I feel that the children are being -used as pawns in this game, and I. object to this very much. We are not a socialist country, yet, and I feel that this type of lobbying is entirely inappropriate. ‘Mrs. Jacqueline Sharpe Deep Cove ' education costs more than an inferior one.. . 1 am thankful the remain- ing trustees see our child- ren’s education in terms other than dollars and cents.
