Your reporter should check her figures; the cost of purchasing “strategic” water- front properties (owned by individuals, not the port) will be significantly more, add to this the costs of raking over the kead leases from the port corporation and “download- ing” federal costs on to dis- trict taxpayers and you have a potential fiscal disaster. The truth is that the costs ares extremely large with potentially 70 properties being targeted for purchase which would place the costs at $50 million, These do mat- ter to taxpayers long term or not. Our district finances are already strained and there are many other needs in our com- munity. The last thing we need isa grandiose plan with an unde- issues of termined pricetag. Hopetully couneil will start assessing che true costs — financial and environmen: tal — before they approve this vision. The only consort that | can find from your feature is that 35% of people who said that they wanted the plan to vo ahead, based their response on a totally inaceu- rate picture of the true costs. I find her conclusion that 35% approval represents “most North Shore cesi- dents” be surprising at best. | hope that district resi- dents will take the time to look at the true costs before approval of this plan.
