Since 1978; she has prac- tised law as a barrister and solici- tor in partnership with the Hon. Thomas A. Dohm, a_ former Supreme Court judge, in Van- couver. The firm of Dohm & Jaf- fer specializes in family law, per- sona! injury and immigration. The practice of the law alone, ' however, was not enough | for Mobina. She realized that the law lags far behind advances made in society, and that to be an effective lawyer, one must also play.a key @ CR role in the community, working to effect change, especially in emerg- ing family law. Mobina chaired the provincial. Task Force on Fantily Violence and was a member of the Cana- dian Panel on Violence Against Women. Out of that experience came her conviction that two im- portant social issues must be. ad- dressed: 1) providing. protection und safety to society’s most vul- erable. members and 2) enabling them to. become economically in- cependent through better job training and job creation. To truly aid those affected, asserts Mobina, safety and empowerment must go hand in hand. In 1983, Mobina was a member of the Governor-General’s Study Conference. She travelled first with’ former. Schreyer and then with the com- mittee. acrcss Canada, | studying the interaction between unions and _indusiry in various .com- ‘ munities. As President of the Westcoast Women’s Network from 1985 to 1987, and member of numerous vocacy; Governor General . other groups of business and pro- fessional women, Mobina has ad- vised women on subjects ranging from business. and : networking skills to how to start their own businesses. In 1987, Mobina ‘founded the Immigrant and Visible Minority Women of. B.C., an organization with 60 provincial chapters. This gorup seeks to help women over- come the barriers of gender, lan- guage, race and class that may limit their full participation in Canadian society. , Mobina’s community service re- cord is extensive and outstanding. This North Vancouver resident's... service includes work with youth, guiding, scouting,. the Duke. of Edinburgh Awards; women’s ad-' immigrant and multicultural groups; and the Lib- eral Party of B.C.
