Children’s libraries popular From page 28 day, but | think parents must be regu- lating it because children are certain- ly reading in this community.” said Hedley. Chidgey said books about steam- engine are back in vogue for boys and girls after years on the scrap heap. Books about dinosaurs have always been a popular staple with the young set. Older children, Grades 4 and 5, like scary books. Cliffhangers are also popular. Haupt said that sometimes enter- tainment mediums such as movies make certain books popular. An example is renewed interest in the children’s classic, Little Women. Haupt says that young readers do get attracted to reading sensuiional- ized stories with plots that go nowhcre and have grotty language. “They are certainly not going to take away anything or grow through that literature at all.” said Haupt. She said kids who don't get into better quality reads may cventually get bored and disappointed in read- ing. Haupt said good books allow children to gain insight and enrich- ment into people, the human charac- ter and the world at large. Chidgey says parents sometimes tell her that they do not like the books . their children have chosen to read. “The bottom line is well at least they are reading,” said Chidgey. The “better stuff’ is available if youngsters want to read it. She suggests parents read to their children, regardless of their age. Haupt said if kids see their par- -ents read and enjoy books then the likelihood that the youngsters will , take up the habit will increase.
