AECLIRERO ECE The West Vancouver shoreline is a public treasure-trove of hidden beaches VIRTUALLY ALL of us have. at one time or another, enjoyed a sunny afternoon at one of the more popular beaches in North or West Vancouver. By Bruce Methven News Reporter Our cravings for the oceanfront ure usually satisfied by the wide sandy panoramas at Ambleside or Dundarave beach in West Vancouver. or the family-oriented North Vancouver waterfront parks of Cates or Deep Cove. Occasionally, however. most of us seek out someplace a litte more peaceful, more private, even seere- tive. There are many treasures for beach explorers in West Vancouver. Some are tiny gems hidden from all but local residents (until now, that is), while others are precious heir- looms shared by all. Most residents hiw that Whytecliff Park is just around the corner from Horseshoe Bay at the end of Marine Drive. On the way there next time, take a detour down Dufferin Ave. and get acquainted with Bachelor Bay. Dufferin ends at a crescent- shaped pebble beach that curves along a cliff-lined bay facing Vancouver Island. There’s room to stretch out on the sand or go for a short stroll along the water's edge. And if you get too hot, there are freshwater showers. Balmy Beach lies immediately to the east of Eagle Harbor and is home to both Parthenon Park and Kew Park. While the former is cer- tainly a good destination for Joung- ing by the water's edge, the fatter is my choice if some swimming is on the agenda. First, to get to the water at Parthenon Park, follow Parthenon Place off Marine D.ive to its end uni u.scend down the steep stairs that begin beside house number 5548. Kew Beach is difficult to find and even more difficult to get to, The effort, however, is worthwhile. To access this tiny treasure, exit at Kew Cliff Road near the 5200 block of Marine Drive, Follow this to Seaside Place and park. To explore a favorite of beach aficionados for years continue east on Marine Drive for a kilometre or so. Caulfeild Park encompasses everything the North Shore has to offer in one location. This inventory of North Shore beaches is by no means a complete list. There are stil) plenty of beaches for you to discover on your own. Take the next sunny afternoon and go exploring.
