mae Ted 9 THE DREAM of solar power is alive and well in the research and development departments of most automakers. One of the best experimental vehicles to come out of their labs, according t auto writer Greg Wilson, is Honda’s “Dream” solar car. onca’s solar-powered AUTOMOTION HARNESSING THE sun’s energy fo power automobiles is an idea with a lot of appeal in an age where fossil-fuel- burning vehicles are taking most of the blame for increasing urban air pollu- tion and associated health problems. The sun's energy is, after all, clean, limitless, powerful, and best of all, free. However, the occasional cloud tends to put a damper on solar-car performance, and nighttime perfor- mance js nothing to write home about. In addition, even the best solar cells can’t produce enough energy to propel a standard 3,000 Ib. (1,350 kg) family sedan. This hasn't dampened the enthu- siasm of solar power engineers, though. The dream of solar power is alive and thriving in the research and development laboratories of major universities and automobile manufacturers. improvements in cell technology and related automotive technolo- gies are pushing the boundaries of solar-car performance further than many had anticipated. Perhaps the best example is Honda’s “Dream” solar car, a light- weight one-passenger solar car that took first-place in the World Solar Challenge race in Australia last November. The Dream sped swiftly and silently across the sun-baked Australian Outback, covering the 3.013 km (1,868 miles) distance in a record-setting 35 hours and 38 minutes, nine-and-a-half hours bet- ter than the previous record. The Dream averaged an amaz- ing 85 km/h (53 mph) over the entire distance and has a top speed of over 130 km/h (80 mph). The Dream's unusual shape — uae 1993 Nissan Maxima” The perfect harmony of luxury and performance in a family sedan. “~S urning to reality long, low and wide — allows 4,504 individual solar cells to be posi- tioned on the upper surface of the car to extract maximum exposure from the sun. The Dream is actually longer and wider than a Cadillac DeVille, but considerably fatter and only 102 cm (40 in.) high.
