Jarvis pressures Victoria for local land commitment in new treaty negetiations PROPERTY OWNERS on the North Shore need assurances from the provin- cial government that their properties will not be up for negotiations under Vic- toria’s new Treaty Commis- sion Act, North Van- couver-Seymour Liberal .MLA Daniel Jarvis has said. The legislation sets up the B.C. Treaty Commission, made up of federal, provincial and aboriginal governments, to oversee the negotiations of modern-day treaties with First Nations in B.C. . “It is my intention to seek from the government a commitment that lands involving fee simple ti- tle of- 1ion-aboriginal lands will not be on the negotiating table,’ said Jarvis. “The government must explain what land is up for negotiation so the residents of the North Shore can rest easy that their property is not affected by this legislation."’ Jarvis said he agrees in principle with the process of negotiating modern-day treaties, and feels the establishment of the treaty comt- mission is timely for all residents of the province. But he added that investors are seeking a resolution to the issue of land claims so they can invest in B.C. with confidence that their investment will not be affected by . &@ process which has not been ade- - quately dealt with for well over 100 years. “There has been no clarification by the Harcourt government where it stands or who will have jurisdiction over the lands in question. These are probably the most imporiant questions at this time,” said Jarvis. He added the establishment of a process to resolve the land claims issue for good is an enormous step to creating social harmony throughout B.C.
