FOR A brief hour, it was just like the old days. Listening
to former prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau address the
University of British Columbia (UBC) students on Nov. 16
made one thing clear: he hasn’t lost a step since the days

when he ran Canada.

His combination of charisma,
intelligence, wit and unmistakable
confidence was still present as he
denounced Quebec's
movement, took potshots at. Brian
Mulroney's fegacy and easily
handled eritics of his past policies
aid actions,

The only glaring difference be-
tween his political heyday — 1968
to 1984 — and today is that he
now reecives more standing ova-
tions and cheers of support.

Wearing the traditional Trudeau
red rose on his lapel and
diminished only by the huge Ca-
nadian flag draped across the back
of the stage, Trudeau defended his
use of the War Measures Act
during the October Crisis of 1970.
He rebuffed the suggestion that
Quebec's independence is in-
evitable. He said the North
American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) is a bad deal for
Canada,

“For the past seven or eight
years we've had a federal govern-
ment which has told Quebec that
it had been slapped in the face,"
he said, referring to Quebec not
being included in the deal to
repatriate the Constitution.

The former prime minister said
that if you tell people they’ve been
slapped in the face often enough
they will believe they’ve been
treated unfairly. If no one opposes
a Quebec move to separate then
the province will surely separate
some day.
