Haida artist supports

Squamish paddlers

BILL REID, the celebrated Haida artist, showed up unex-
pectedly at Horseshoe Bay to lend his support. to the
Squamish Nation Sea-going Society fundraising celebration

held on Saturday, May 8.

Reid arrived in the Kaxulh, the
ocean-going canoe the Squamish
paddlers will take on the 350-mile
(560 km) journey to Waglisla
(Bella Bella) where they will take
part in the Qatuwas Festival.

The festival is being held June
27 to celebrate aboriginal mari-
time culture and is expected to
draw canoes from native villages
along the B.C. coast as well as
Washington state.

Reid signed posters at the Spirit
Gallery, Horseshoe Bay’s native
art showcase.’ Connie Spiers,
owner of the gallery, was largely
responsible for planning the fund-
raiser.

The posters will be sold and a
portion of the funds will be used
to support the journey.

Other events during the day in-
cluded rides in the kaxulh, a
native lunch held at Troll’s Res-
taurant, native carvers displaying
their techniques, and an exhibition
of traditional dancing.

The society has raised nearly
half of the money necessary for
the trip, much of it raised through
the sale of T-shirts and raffle
