Parks is currently seeking input from West Vancouver on its Cypress Provincial Park master plan. In its report on the master plan, the advisory planning commission sub-committee stated that the Class A park’s facilities do not meet today’s expectations for a park of its class. Graham Stallard, recording sec- retary for the sub-committee, also wrote that the sub-committee had concerns about the last-minute cancellation of a public meeting on the master plan. Latin ri WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL As for the $40 million upgrade of Cypress Bow! ski and recre- ation facilities proposed by Cypress Bowl Recreations Ltd., the sub-committee supported the idea of upgrading the buildings and service facilities, but was crit- ical of the company’s list of op- tions for the future. Those options were limited to: @ maintaining the status quo; @ embarking on large-scale de- velopment that would add 100 hectares of public land to the 600 hectares already used by the com- pany under its permit and would encroach on Hollyburn Mountain. “The sub-committee _ believes that other lesser options should be presented, such as enhancement of the existing ski area and parking areas without development on Hollyburn) Mountain,’’ wrote Stallard. Of the three Cypress park peaks — Black, Strachan and Hollyburn — Hollyburn is the only without ski development. The sub-committee note that little attention had been paid to the visual impact of alpine skiing development, such as the view of the area from Point Grey and Vancouver City. While the sub-committee was in favor of a long-term plan for ff Cypress Bowl, it did not see the justification for a grant of a fur- ther 100 hectares into private hands. A public forum on the master plan is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 28. Katharine Steig, a reoresentative of Friends of Cypress Provincial Park, said that in the 1991 out- door recreation council of 8.C. survey, Lower Mainland residents indicated that the need for more natural parks and recreation trails was higher than for any other community leisure amenity.
