starts increased to 162,000
units, seasonably adjusted at
an annual level (SAAR), ac-
cording to Canada Mor-
tgage and Housing Cor-
poration (CMHC). This is a
{2% increase from the
revised January level of
144,000 units (SAAR).

The majority of the in-
crease was due to higher
starts of social housing in
Ontario. Except in Alberta
and British Columbia, the
market has not yet respond-
ed to lower interest rates.

Alt of the increase is at-
tributable to multiple units,
which rose 32% in urban
areas from 57,000 units
SAAR to 75,000 units
SAAR. Single detached
units in urban areas remain-

the ending of the provincial

porting homeownership.

The decline in Quebee
was balanced by a 63% in-
crease in Ontario to 62,000
units SAAR. Growth in
social housing construction
in Ontario more than offset
a drop in private construc-
tion of both single detached
and multiple units.

British Columbia starts
rose again as the markets
there continue to show
strength. Alberta, Nova
Scotia, Saskatchewan and
Prince Edward Island also
posted increased starts,
while Newfoundland, New
Brunswick and Manitoba
showed slight declines.
