pluralism.

There is no ruling style, no

-esthetic dictatorship. Art That
Works celebrates the rich
multiplicity of forms of expression
and the vigorous heterogeneity of
influences that are brought to bear
on the contemporary production
of handmade, visually stimulating,
functional objects.

There are lamps that look like
shaman’s masks, tables and chairs
that could serve as abstract
sculptures, a set of walnut drawers
in the shape of an ancient Greek
pillar, and space-age metal con-
tainers which might be treasures
from another planet.

Ordinary and familiar things
become extraordinary and unfa-
miliar when infused with the forms
and figures unabashedly pilfered
from an astonishingly wide variety
of sources in American culture.

Albert Paley’s Plant Stand, forg-
ed out of steel and carved siate, is -
a sculptural tour de force whose
voluptuous curves and organic
forms are reminiscent of the sen-
timental naturalism of Art
Nouveau.

Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend’s
Pro Rata Lyricism Screen, an
astonishingly skilful stained-glass
room-divider in an ash frame, is a
take-off on a dramatic Kandinsky
abstract expressionist painting.

Lee Weitzman’s Spiral Table,
with its crisp lines and precision
cuts, is reminiscent not only of the
pared-down style of Art Deco but
of the mathematical formalistic
constructions of Naum Gabo.

The predominant mood here,
thougi, is not so much profundity
as humor.

The backs of Mitch Ryerson’s
playful rockers for children are the
washboards of a bygone era.

The glass top of Judy McKie’s
whimsical table is supported by
the ears, tails, and dog-bones of
stylized mahogany hounds.

The extra-long legs of Bob
Trotman’s triangular ornamental
