ye THE THIRD exiended-hours med- ical clinic to open on the North Shore within the past six months opened recently at North Van- couver’s Park and Tilford Shopp- ing Centre. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter Although it is open to anyone, the Park and Tilford Medical Clinic is expected to serve primari- ly North Vancouver, Lynn Valley and Deep Cove residents. Three Deep Cove practitioners, Dr. Craig Bergstrom, Dr. John Maynard and Dr. Peter Richards, medical clinic to provide emergen- cy or urgent care during and after regular doctors’ hours. The clinic will draw from a pool of 18 area doctors. One doctor will staff the clinic while another doc- tor will act as a back-up to make house calls if necessary. Bergstrom said the clinic will al- leviate pressure on Lions Gate Hospital's emergency ward. “One of the major motivations is to avoid crowding in the emergency room at LGH over the peak hours," he said. ‘*The weekends are the bad time. It’s been an ongoing problem.”’ All doctors involved in the clinic have North Shore practices and are on staff at LGH. “We feel rather strongly that this is an important function of health care previously missing from other walk-in style health clinics,’’ Bergstrom said. ‘‘All of us know the functioning of the hospital and we can do the follow-up right into the hospital if required,”’ he said. He added that the clinic is designed to complement rather than replace family practices. Although al! doctors make house calls, Bergstrom said people are reluctant to bother a doctor at home. Conversely, doctors are reluctant to diagnose illnesses over the phone. The clinic is expected to deal with a lot of children with infec- tious diseases, minor trauma inju- ries and ear and eye ailments. Al- though it does not have facilities to cope with such major emergencies as heart attacks, the clinic could act as a transfer point to the hospi- tal The clinic’s doctors anticipate that the facility will receive ap- proximately 30 visits a day, al- though the six-room clinic has the capacity for 100 visits daily if nec- essary. The number of doctors and the hours of the clinic may change ac-- cording to the demand, Bergstrom said.
