gS THE VOICE OF NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER north shore Toyota Celica offers wide range of choice for sports car FOR THE sports car lover, the name Celica means two things, a wide range of choices and a Celica for just about everyone. **The Celica range extends from the 115 horsepower ST Coupe to the 190 horsepower GT-S 4WD Turbo and the steps between should satisfy the most discerning buyer,’’ reports Toyota Canada Inc. senior vice-president Hector Dupuis. There are two basic Celica body shapes, Coupe and Liftback, each of which feature windcheating styl- ing on a front-wheel drive plat- form, Underneath its aerodynamic exterior, Celica is a high-tech combination with four-wheel in- dependent suspension. Power steering and power- assisted brakes are standard equipment. Both front and four- wheel drive GT-S models are equipped with four-wheel disc brakes while front disc/rear drum brakes are fitted to GT and ST models. The basic Celica power unit is a sophisticated computer-controlled twin cam/I6 valve, 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine which is available in electronically fuel in- jected 115, 135 or 190 turbocharg- ed variants. Both the ST and the GT model Celicas are equipped with a 115 horsepower engine. The ST coupe and both GT coupe and Liftback use a five- speed manual overdrive transmis- sion, while the ST coupe and GT Liftback are also available with optional four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The 135 horsepower GT-S Coupe and Liftback and the 190 horsepower GT-S 4WD Turbo are available with five-speed manual overdrive transmission only. In addition, the 4WD Celica Turbo is equipped with A.B.S. (Antilock Braking System) as standard equipment while both the front- wheel drive Celica GT-S Liftback and Coupe models are available with optional A.B.S. The extra horsepower of Celica Turbo’s 190 horsepower is trans- mitted to the road by a highly sophisticated full-tims four-wheel drive system which employs a viscous coupling-controlled centre differential in addition to the front and rear differential units. The ex- ceptionally compact transaxle unit, which houses the transmission, front and centre differentials and transfer gears, occupies the same position as the front-wheel drive transmission and does not infringe on the Celica’s roomy passenger compartment. The 4WD Turbo retains Celica’s proven MacPherson strut with coil springs and stabilizer bar front suspension and MacPherson strut with coil springs, dual lower link and stabilizer bar rear suspension system. However, clutch, brakes, main chassis floor pan, cross members and brackets have been Strengthened to cope with the Celica ‘Turbo’s increased horse- power. Available in red and white only, Celica Turbo features uniquely- styled aerodynamic aluminum alloy wheels. All aero components such as front and rear spoilers, rear underbody spoiler and side skirts as well as protective side mouldings are color-keyed. Stand- ard fog lights are also integrated with the front spoiler. Designed with driving comfort in mind, all Celica models are equipped with stepless reclining fabric bucket seats and interior carpeting as standard equipment. An adjustable eight-way driver's sport seat with power lumbar sup- port and side support is standard ra on GT-S while leather seats and in- terior are optional on 4WD Turbo. Standard equipment on all Celicas includes redesigned audio components for 1989. A _ four- speaker AM/FM stereo with elec- tronic tuner is fitted to all models except the 4WD Turbo which is fitted with a four-speaker elec- tronic tuning AM_stereo/FM stereo cassette combo with “Acoustic Flavor’’ tone control. “Both front and full-time 4- ‘movers “wheel drive models feature the same attractive styling, making Celica a proven winner with sports car fans of all types. As a city commuter or an open road grand tourer, Celica performs with all- weather safety,’’ says Dupuis. Celica prices start at $16,938 for the 115 horsepower ST Coupe. The 135 horsepower GT-S is priced from $21,198 while the 190 horse- power GT-S 4WD Turbo is priced from $31,088.
