FIRE HAZARD Make sure that appliances don’t overheat WHETHER YOU purchase an electric kettle or a range, you ex- pect your appliance to last a long time. But every appliance can fail and, with those that use heating ele- ments, it is wise to know what steps can be taken to prevent overheating and possibly cause a ire. At the heart of most electrical heating and cooking appliances is a regulating control or thermostat, which reguiates the temperature within a specified range in much the same manner 4 wall thermostat controls the temperature of a house. It also provides built-in overheating protection — it turns the power off at a set upper temperature and then turns it back oa wher the temperature drops to a lower sct point. Thermostats do age and can fall out of calibration or even fail altogether. This can lead to dan- gerous conditions for appliances that are not attended while in use. To prevent the worst of cir- cumstances, most heating appli- ances have a backup temperature control called a one-shot thermal protector, an emergency device which operates when the regulating thermostat fails in the closed posi- tion. It is called 2 one-shot protector because the appliance cannot be used again once the backup pro- tector cuts the power to the heating element. If the appliance is to be repaired a? all, it should only be done by someone authorized to do this work. When a heating appliance stops working it can be dangerous to try and replace the one-shot protector yourself. Its position is critical and determines at what temperature the one-shot breaks the flow of power. if the position is changed during repair, the one-shot protector may activate too early or tragically, too Over the years, CSA’s Audits and Investigations Group has in- vestigated many cozplaints involv- ing appliances that overheated and, in some cases, caused fires. They have discovered that do-it- yourself repair jobs are often the root of the problem.
