However, the article contained some inaccuracies that need clari- fying. First, the Community Pro- file of the City of North Van- couver (1988) reports that not 6,252 but 2,625 (7.7 per cent) adults have less than a Grade 9 education (Census, 1981). Four qualified teachers work in the cen- tre and the trained volunteers from Project SecondStart assist them. Finally, the use of the word ‘‘il- literate’ in the title and text was unfortunate as those of us trying to help under-educated adults find it offensive. In addition, most adults attending the centre are working to complete their high school graduation and took excep- tion to being labelled ‘“‘illiterate.’”’ The Adult Learning Centre and volunteers in Project SecondStart play a critical role in helping North Shore adults upgrade their skills and obtain Grade 12 diplomas. The self-paced nature of these programs fits well with adults who live busy lives and carry other responsibilities. Free counselling for adults who want to complete their education is available.
