Anemones grow wel From page 34 duces a steady supply of blooms throughout the season. Montbretia is a bulbous plant whose flowers — usually orange, yellow or scarlet -- appear in dou- ble rows of multi-flowered spikes on thin stems. During their bloom- ing, in August, Montbretia reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32 in). PLANT EARLY The small corms can be planted in early spring, about 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 cm) deep, in a sunny spot. Anemones have become very popular as a cut-flower in florists’ displays and many Canadians now want to grow them at home. Although many do well in gardens with excellent drainage and sun- shine, hobby gardeners should be aware that they will not be as large or look exactly like the florists’ versions. Early spring planting,at a depth of 6cm (2% in), 6 to 8 cm apart, will generally produce a_ plant about 30 cm (about 12 in.) tall. The single-flowered Anemone ‘De Caen’ is widely available today, as IT’S EASY on N. Shore is the seimi-double ‘St. Brigid’. Southern B.C, residents can en- joy permanent plantings of anemones, where they naturalize well, The low cost of many summer bulbs compares well with most annual bedding plants. One such is the anemone, another is Oxalis deppi. Also called the four-leaf clover or wood sorrel, its little pinky-red flowers last a long time and its clover leaves contribute to its or- namental valuc. This is a sun-lov- ing, low-growing plant whose corms can be planted cither in the garden or in pots, about 5 cm (2 in.) deep. . Gne summer bulb that scems poised on the brink of great popu- larity is the Liatris. Although often classed as a perennial, this plant has tuberous roots. As its blooms become more common in florists’ arrangements, Liatris is enjoying increased recognition. Plant the tuberous rhizomes a few centimeters deep. In the full flush of summer the one-metre (39 in.) tall -plant will produce a re- markable looking spike that flowers from top to bottom in lilac-pink. ‘ and ‘WE'LL SHOW YOU HOW!
