36 - Wednesday, July 29, 1987 - North Shore News ACCORDING TO ICBC STUDY Young drivers are not deviant ..they are just like father SOCIETY'S ATTITUDE toward young drivers must change radical- ly if there is to be any major im- provement in driving standards of the 16-21 years old age group. That’s the central message of Rethinking Young Drivers, a research document just released by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. “The purpose of this report is to give insight into young drivers’ everyday lives, offering a greater opportunity to design measures relevant to young people,’’ says Peter Rothe, ICBC’s manager of research and development and editor and principal investigator The research findings will help further development of the Cor- poration’s existing school pro- grams. The provincial auto insurer allocates $3 million annually to traffic safety education in the schools and communities und co- funding of the CounterAttack program against drinking and driv- ing. 1,376 secondary school students in grades 10 through 12 were surveyed on a wide range of rele- vant topics, including lifestyle, relationships with pgers and parents, their driving habits and attitudes toward risk-taking and drinking and driving. variety of data gathering tech- niques to develop an understan- ding of young pcople’s everyday lives: © 130 16-18-year-old drivers who had been involved in inju- ry-producing crashes were inter- viewed about their crashes and the circumstances leading up to them. * 200 randomly-selected grade 10-12 students were interviewed in small groups to arrive at a picture of their lives, relationships to cars, family etc. * 100 parents discussed their views on young driveis. © The B.C. accident data base was analysed according to young driver involvement in crashes. The findings told ICBC resear- chers that parental example has a powerful influence on teen drivers. In fact, young people are more like the rest of the driving population than they or their elders think. The attitude of boys particularly, is often molded before their first formal driving lesson. As a_oresult, their behavior behind the wheel is not deviant but simply patterned on that of their parents. “In the intimate personal con- text of the passenger compartment, they begin to learn not only driv- ing-related skills, but also the ap- propriateness of certain attitudes,”’ “Many of the routine activities in which young drivers engage and regard as safe are dangerous. However drivers of all ages engage in such activities.” The report urges society to adopt a more positive pro-active approach to young drivers. Rec- ommendations include: * Children should have access to safe driving instructional material long before they are old enough to get behind the wheel. e Since teaching sons to drive is still a significant “rite of passage”’, fathers should be recognized for their efforts and provided with in- formation to help them to do a better job. for the publication.
