isICK HANSEN has caught the imagination of North Shore residents who have been actively fund raising for his Man in Motion tour throughout the year. Students, individual residents, charity groups and businesses all got behind the wheelchair athlete and his goal to raise $10 million for spinal cord research. After two vears on the road Hansen comes home today. The main focus for Handsworth Secondary School's student council this year has been fund raising for Hansen. The students raised $3,500 from a jello eating contest, coin drive, raffle, lip sync and cupid com- patibility contest. Vice-principal Sally Chamberlain said Hansen has been a role model for the students. “They really admire him for what he’s doing. And it shows the kids that they can do whatever they set their minds to doing,’’ she said. Seven North Vancouver residents were instrumentaj in helping raise $50,000 for the Rick Hansen Man in Motion tour. The seven made up half of the fund-raising committee from the Vancouver Employee Benefit In- dustry, which held an auction May 7 to raise the donation. The local members are Ron Young, Eileen Beadle, Roger Leedham, Kathy Clarke, Roy Dawson, David McAdam and Pamela Mills. General manager Jack Irwin of North Vancouver’s Pacific Honda said a special fund-raising promo- ‘tion was held allowing auto buyers to donate money to Hansen’s fund. For each new or used car sold between April 8 and 12, Pacific Honda donated $100 to the charity — $600 was raised. North Vancouver Lawn Bowl- ing Club raised $236. *Eagle Harbour Community Centre raised $75 from donations. *Shaw Cable Employees raised $474 in a 50-50 draw. *North Vancouver teachers and Capilano College teachers raised money from a hockey game exhib- ition. *Ridgeview Elementary School raised over $1,100 from a penny drive. eLynn Valley Safeway raised $6,000 from the sale of hot dogs, pop and through donations. Upcoming events: The North Vancouver Recreation Centre and Ballroom Dance Club and the 23rd Street Tap Dancers Club will hold a dance-off June 5 to raise funds; the North Vancouver District Parks Department will hold a bulb sale Saturday, May 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at Maplewood Farm; North Vancouver City will sell firewood May 30 with proceeds to Hansen’s cause.
