WV system tests lungs

THE PROVINCE'S first mobile
testing team for respiratory disease
is going to the public via West
Vancouver-based MLT Mobile
Lung Testing Ltd.

MLT, founded by respiratory
specialists Kitty Coppin and Don
Hrycun, uses a computerized lung
function measurement system
which detects lung abnormalities
before they are evident on X-rays.

Test subjects simply inhale and
exhale into a tube connected to the
computer system.

“The most important part of
our service is to rate a person’s

lung performance against a
statistical. average baseline and
then follow up any changes over
time by means of record,’’ said
Coppin. ‘‘The system will get peo-
ple to a specialist before they
become crippled with lung
diseas: ’’

But Coppin points out, the
system cannot pick up lung cancer
or shortness of breath due to heart
disease. It does pick up obstructive
or restrictive respiratory diseases
such as work-related obstructive
asbestosis or silicosis and restric-
tive asthma, bronchitis and em-
physema.

‘What once the hospitals or
clinics could only do has become
portable with the arrival of
microprocessors,”’ said Coppin.
