We are all nice chaps, believe it or not. But in spite of having come a long way since his hippie handclasp days, Bob still gives way to liberal longings. Last Sunday he was all misty- eyed about the Indians, especially after reading a piece in one of their publications. The Red Man, said Bob, was now on freedom road, the Sechelts having gained self-government. Hallelujah! He quoted with relish one Stanley Dixon, an Indian who uses words like racist and redneck in referring to us white trash. Now that the Indians were shedding the shackles placed on them by the evil Department of Indian Affairs, suggested Dixon, there were going to be all kinds of exciting economic develop- } ments. FREE AT LAST! By happy coincidence, I had no sooner read Bob’s thrilling piece than a North Vancouver chap whose name is John was on the phone. And he was spitting mad about Indians, especially the | noble savages whose economic development is connected to the sale of fish snatched, stabbed, snagged and grabbed from the Capilano. It’s an old story now. Every year there are complaints about the way our Red brothers wade around the river taking the fish as they try to struggle upstream to the hatchery. There’s no sport about it. Where fishing’s concerned, most | Indians don’t like sport. John, their journey upstream didn’t who has watched the game many help. John saw lots of springs be- | SEYMOUR, GROUSE, CYPRESS times, was very hot about that. Sometimes weighted barbs are thrown across the water, and sometimes the Indians jab at the creatures with knives on the end of sticks. Many of the salmon get off, only to die later and be wasted, Call it fish-murder, not fishing. Sometimes, too, the salmon are left to go bad in the hot sun, there always being more where those came from. Then it’s off with the rest to a spot behind the Avalon Hotel to flog the loot at a few bucks a time. The white trash, as we all know, are confined to the ocean beyond the river mouth and may use only barbless hooks. And God help the guy who breaks the rules. The Indians are brash and brazen because, courtesy of Ot- tawa and the courts, they are allowed to ‘‘fish for food’’. That’s the thought behind this annual fish hunt, anyway. And never mind if the hatchery at the top of the river suffers as a result of these entrepreneurial endeavors. This year only 70 to 80 springs got up the river, the main reason being that the water was low. But the mayhem that went on before the fish had a chance to make Local ski facilities hope to open this weekend THE NORTH SHORE’S three mountains are poised to open downhill ski facilities this weekend. The opening is dependent on weather, but reports from all three mountains indicate there is enough snow on each to allow downhill skiing. As of Wednesday, Seymour Mountain had.about three feet of snow at its summit. Seymour ski director Wayne Wong, who took a test ski run on Seymour Wednesday afternoon, said the mountain will offer free. skiing today (Friday) and be open Saturday and Sunday for paying customers. “The conditions were great,’’ Wong said. * Grouse, with a 1%-foot base as of Wednesday, has tentative plans to open Saturday. At Cypress, a spokesman said the mountain had no definite plans to open for the weekend, but ad- vised skiers to call the mountain’s snow phone at 926-6007 for in- formation. The mountain had about 1% feet of snow as of Wednesday. For snow conditions at Seymour call 986-3444, at Grouse call 986- 6262. ing taken out. He also reported illegal fish sales. Contrary to the myth, most Indians don't give a fig for con- * servation. A lot of whites are that way too when they get the chance, but we don't claim while screwing things up to be in close touch with the Great Spirit, or with the eagle, the whale and the raven, John suggested a solution to the Capilano problem. Hoisting fish out of the river should be stopped, and the fish given to Indians for food later, after spawning. But the hatchery peo- ple tell me they've tried that and the Indians won't go for it, the fish then not being of such high quality. And there’s no point in asking Ottawa to change the law. Those fools are too concerned about kissing Indians bums so that they won’t be called racists. John and I are racists, though, if by ‘‘racist’’ is meant stopping | fish-murder, and we spent time trying to think up new cuss- words to throw at our miserable rulers. Meanwhile, we can think about how great things will be-when the Indians are free instead of ‘‘hav- ing their wrists handcuffed behind their back’, as Dixon put it.
