Coho Festival

expects crowds
of up to 15,000

UP TO 15,000 people are expected to pack West Van-

couver’s Ambleside Park Sept. 7 as this year’s annual Coho

festival welcomes the salmon back to the Capilano River.

festival coordinator, admits that
the figure may be optimistic, but

adds he does not think it is im-
possible, given the scope of the
1986 festival. Nine thousand peo-
ple were lured to last year’s event,

The annual festival, now in its
seventh year, is intended to pro-
mote awareness of salmon
enhancement, Burns says,

As part of the four-day festival,
this year scheduled Sept. 3-7, run-
ners from across the province will
perform a Squamish Indian Band
tradition and race across the Lions
‘Gate Bridge, through Stanley Park
and finish at Vancouver's Kisdano
Beach,

In the past, natives ran from the
mouth of the Capilano River to
Kitsilano Beach to tell of the newly
arrived salmon run.

Last’ year, 600 runners par-
ticipated in the 14-km race, the on-
ly one to cross the Lions Gate
Bridge. This year, 700 to 800
facers are expected to make the
scenic trek,

Also included in the festival is a
Tvi-km Coho walk up the
Capilano Pacific Trail to the
Cleveland Dam and the Capilano
Salmon Hatchery,

“You can trace the odyssey of
the salmon and see the marvel of
one of nature’s spectacies,"’ ex-
plains Burns.

On Aug. 30, the native war
canoe Gilwa will travel from the
Musqueam Indian Reserve to the
