The team had a successful season and achieved some im- pressive statistics. They scored the most goals in Pee Wee league play, averaging over five goals per game, while achieving the lowest goals against average of 1.78 per game. They also had the second lowest penally minutes in the league. The News opened the scoring early in the first period on a goal by their leading goal scorer Dave Eisler, assisted by Mike Schemmer and Dale Spooner. The lead held up until late in the period when Mike Smith scored for the Canadians to tie the game at one each. The only goal of the second period was scored on a power play by Avalon’s Phil Keefe, with assisis going to Darretl Johnson and Mike Smith. Both goaltenders played well, with Kevin Josephison of the News turning in another excellent per- formance. The News tied the game al two with six and a half minutes re- maining on a goal by Mike Schemmer, assisted by Dale Spooner and Doug Tomkin. The best chance to break the deadiock came in the final minute of play as the captain of the News, Bruce Bonbernard broke in with Doug Tomkin. With the Avalon goalie slightly out of position, Bonbernard’s high shot rattled off the post. The tie leaves the News with a 10 wins, eight losses and three ties re- cord and in the fourth and final playoff spot just ahead of the Avalon, with three games remain- ing. The Togo Hawks lead the league, followed by the defending champions for the past two years, the Raven Wranglers. The Scott Flyers are third followed by the News in fourth, and the Avalon in fifth, well back are the Wagner Raiders, Miller Lites, and Lynnwood Chasers. Holidays dance on Boston Pizza HOLIDAY’S came up with two’ wins in North Shore Senior Inter- mediate Men’s Hockey League (NSSIMHL) action recently. On Feb 28 Holiday's defeated Drillers bore Warriors THE Drillers out hustled the War- riors en route to a 6-1 triumph in recent North Shore Senior Hockey League (NSSHL) action. Ray Matheson tipped in Larry Brown’s goalmouth .pass to give the Drillers a first-period lead. Less than two minutes later, Ted White squeezed the puck past Keith Gibson to tie the game. Rene Marleau scored on a breakaway later in the period to restore the Drillers’ lead. the struggling Global West Wholesale Flyers 8-3. Holiday’s were lead by Mike MacDonald who collected a hat trick and was helped by team mate Ken Sadler who scored twice with two assists. On Saturday night, Holiday’s upset second-place Boston Pizza 6-5 Sadler and Brian Hague of Holidays had strong games as each scored four points. With the wins Holiday’s moved into fourth spot in NSSIMHL standings, one ahead of the L.A. Tavern Hawks, who have three games in hand. In other playoff races, the Blues battled Hightest Equipment Hustlers twice in recent league play. : Both teams are fighting for the last playoff spot and the Blues helped their efforts by taking three points of the four up for grabs. The Blues took solid hold of the spot by defeating the Husilers 2-0 and followed the win with a 2-2 tie, Both goaltenders, Blair Sharp of the Blues and John Musser with the Hustlers, came up with strong performances. In the second game Peter Martin of the Blues scored the two goals for the tie. The only other game played saw Bert’s Drillers surprise Whites Automotive Buccanneers 5-3, Bert's handed the Buc’s only their third loss of the year. With the win the Drillers move within two points of second-place Boston Pizza.
