it’s still polite to say thanks to cook

DEAR MISS MANNERS —
When [ was about to move
from my home of many
years to another stale, a
farewell dinrer party was
given for me by two friends.

The day before the dinner,
one of the hostesses called to
say that she would be unable
to attend because she had
the chance to attend the In-
dianapolis 500, but she had
Prepared the food (she is a
gourmet cook) and knew we
would have a lovely time.
She was right. and we did.

My dilemma now is how
do I write a thank-you note,
or do I even owe her one? I

have alresdy decided that
her behavior makes it quite
Clear where our friendship
ranks in her priorities, and 1
do not plan to go out of my
way to seek her company in
the future,

Ido not, however, want to
be as thoughtless ard ia-
sincere as she,
