Mailbox Insensitive residents raise ire Dear Editor: Re the ridiculous articie regarding the wheelchair sit- uation at the Beacon Hill Lodge in West Vancouver. After reading such an ar- ticle one begins to wonder where common sense stops and the so-called ‘‘do- gooders’’ of this fair com- munity take up arms on sub- jects they so obviously know little about. With tongue in cheek one wonders if they would prefer Mrs. Ezart and her able assistant Mrs. Geroff to put up nice strong palm trees for the folks to lean on, maybe the patient could pretend his poor old legs Were just o.k. now. My ire comes to the sur- face when | read this trash and if you are prepared to make the establishment bet- ter and more comfortable... why not volunteer to read, write, heip feed and learn what it is really all about. You may leave that establishment a little less critical and much more enriched as a human being. My experience at Beacon Hill is first hand. If I ever have to go to a facility may it be there. Last summer when it was so very hot | had occasion to visit Mrs. Ezart’s office and it was hot, the sun shone fully’ on her desk. I suggested she turn her desk so she would not be in direct’ sunlight. The answer from this lady, who has dedicated her life to the elderly said ‘‘No, if I do that my back would be to any resident coming through that door to talk and that would be unacceptable to me."’ We all, God forbid, may have to be in a care facility one day and now more than ever is the time to offer con- structive criticism to enrich the lives of those already there and help with the very difficult task the staff some- times has. The legs are gone, dear anonymous friends with the foliage, but thuse old wheelchairs will help many folk do more, see more and enjoy more than you could possibly realize. It offers in- dependence and best of all dignity. So instead of being critical of any facility and especially this one... Go take a wheelchair victim for a walk, to Expo (they love it) for tea at the mall. I will guarantee you personally it will enrich your very soul and when you are in the wheelchair a few years down the line I will come and with love and pride show you a whole new world. Betty A.
