B2 - Wednesday, May 9, 1984 - North Shore News Strong marat IN SPITE OF giving the top spots to foreign runners, the North Shore was more than ably represented tn Sunday’s '3th annual Vancouver Marathon. The strongest performance by anyone from the North side of the bridges was that of Nancy McLaren of North Vancouver who _ finished second to Carol Raven, a 27 year old New Zealand vetrinarian in the women’s division. The second place finish was a repeat showing by the 37 year old North Van res- ident from her 1981 placing. Raven’s winning time was 2:52:03. Proving that even wat- ching a marathon can _ be more than a bit habit form- ing was SO year old Pat Boname from West Vancouver. The mother of four has been a spotter at the race for the past number of years. And finally, she gave up her spotting post and decided to run in the event for the first time ever. Mrs Boname was the last official finisher. The men’s competition was won by Ric Sayre of Oregon in the relatively slow time of 2:36:34, beating Tom Howard of Vancouver who finished second in 2:17:07. A number of top mara- thon runners turned down the Vancouver event because of the closeness of Olympic Trials in both the United States and Canada. The Canadian Olympic marathon trials will be held in Ottawa next Sunday while the U.S. trials are in three weeks. Tom Howard, who says he plans to compete in Ottawa, won the Vancouver event in 1978. Japanese runners finished third and fourth. And while not in the top numbers, evergreen Hugh Clifford of West Vancouver finished his loth marathon, not a bad feat for a man of 77 years. More than 2000 runners took part inthe event which started and finished at the B.C. Place stadium. .
