Every New Year's thousands of people make the effort to quit smoking but of them are back at it before the end of the Rose parade. Recent studies however, haw .. cated that lack of preparation is a major cause of failure. “Good intentions are not enough” says Martin a spokesman for the organization. “Cigarette is an insidious habit. To beat it the smoker must prepare physically and emotionally. Impulse quitting is finc, if it works, but most smokers need to be prepared to deal with the withdrawal symptoms when they come — and they most certainly will comt.” GUIDE PUBLISHED To assist smokers who really want to quit the Association has published a free pamphic}. or guide and checklist on various aspects of quitting. One section, on physical preparation, contains the suggestion that heavy smokers, or smokers who have repeatedly failed to quit on their own, should reduce their smoking by half over a two week period and then quit cold turkey. The reduction in the amount smoked will greatly reduce the withdrawal discomfort. Another section, on psycho- logical preparation, contains the suggestion that the smoker set a quitting date at least seven days in advance.” but no more than thirty days in advance. “Beyond that,” commented Thompson, “the smoker is procrastinating.” Accoridng to Thompson, the key to successful quitting is careful preparation. Too ‘many smokers decide to quit — on New Year's Eve, leaving themselves only a few hours preparation time. “This is just nat enough time for such a far reaching lifestyle alteration.” QU#FT SMOKING CLASSES o “We intend to follow up this educational campaign with a series of quit smoking classes im January. Many people can't, or don’t want to quit on their own. We have group sessions scheduled to start in most lower mainland communi- ties.” Thompson stated. He believes that bcha- vioral programs such as theirs, in a group support context offers the best hope for smokers. An cx-smoker himself Thompson believes it was the group situation that was the key factor for him. “But we have added an intensive maintenance component to the group method, and that we belicve, makes ours the Most com- prehensive smoking cessa- tion program now available in British Columbia, if not Canada.” The Es-Smokcrs’ Associa- tion was formed by a group. of individuals who wish to contribute their time, talents and cxpericnce to help others quit smoking and stay quit. it hopes to accomplish this through the preparation of free smoking cducation material such as the Quit Smoking Guide, and the sponsorship of at-cost quit smoking clinics throughout the province.
