The drama of a sioperty rezoning request in Hor- seshoe Bay (reported i in last Wednesday's News) is taking more unusual twists and turns with the resignation of the ‘Horseshoe Bay Com- munity Association president from his Post. Last week developer Martin Kaffka and the vice-~ a sprésident of the community association, Judy Weiser, kept the council chamber ‘Spectators on the edges of their seats as they tried to. discredit one another at a West Vancouver council hearing. Each claimed to be reporting thé views. of Patrick Hampson, president of the community assocation, since Hampson was absent from the meeting. In a May 28 letter to council which Hampson. wrote after he heard what happened at the hearing, he said our Association Strives to be impartial as do its individual members. I personally will NOT play word games with the Kaffkas and announce to you that I am resigning .... + eee I respectfully wish to disassociate myself from a position that I felt was contributing to the good of the community, but has instead, become a most distressing burden.” He continued, wish to present to you Mrs. Weiser, who has my respect as an individual and as Vice- President of the Association. Mrs. Weiser will act in the capacity of President until I return (from holidays) 4 days hence ... all further com- munications . should be directed to her until a new President can be duly voted in.” LEAPT INTO FRAY On May 29, the day following the hearing, developer Martin Kaffka > continued his argument in a letter to Hampson with a copy to council: “I am writing this letter to relate what took place, for I feel that the public hearing brought out some question as to the credibility of the H.S.B.C.A. I did not attack the H.S.B.C.A. as after talking to you I knew that ~ Kata Rezoning Application Judy Weiser “the ethics of. “I further was | representing association's views. the - Kaffka’ S parents leapt into: . the fray with more letters, Peter Kaffka wrote to council May 29, with a copy to David Weiser (Judy's husband), saying “I have written to the Architectural . And Elizabeth Kaffka wrote to council May 30, with a copy sent to Weiser, / on the allegation that Weiser | had approached the Kaffkas to purchase the property to build duplexes. HEARING TO RESUME “Mr. Weiser explained to me,” she said, “that although he had made an offer to purchase the property and had intended putting duplexes on it, he had since then given it very much careful thought and had - come to the conclusion that ‘the property. was more suitable for single family residences. “While 1 fully recognise that his wish to purchase the property, even his proposal to build duplexes on it, and his changing his mind should have no bearing on our application, that he should deny his intention to put up duplexes places his integrity in doubt and that he should stand up before Council and publicly deny this intention, must surely make his credibility very questionable ” The Kaffka property in question is located at 6496 Bay Street. facing the ‘waterfront park and across the street from Libby Lodge for senior citizens. Because speakers at last week's hearing managed to cast so much doubt on one another’s statements, the hearing was adjourned to 8 p.m., Monday, June 11, to enable council to obtain further Clarification of the situation, Skateboarders loved West Vancouver's once Controversial skateboard park is now a quiet success. Recreation manager Frank Kurucz reported to council Monday that ac cidents and vandalism are minimal and “the neighbors aré very pleased with the facility”.
