. Page 30, January 24, 1978~- North Shore News ‘Cancellation of dental clinic rapped Wala} A group of North Shore parents_ are protesting the recent. cancellation of a dental screening program for ' three-year-olds by the North Shore Health Unit... TTT The group, organized by -. Simone Carrodus of North Vancouver, is sending an individually signed ‘petition letter to the health unit demanding the re- establishment of the clinic. Extracts fr as follows: > — | “I wish to express my disappointment that the. three-year-old dental clinic is being discontinued. I am asking you to establish the. clinic again immediately. “The clinic was very good introduction for three-year- olds to dentist-y; it was Positive step towards changitig unhealthy public attitudes to dentistry. The program (a visit to the hygienist involving talk, teeth cleaning, and ap- plication of fluoride to the ~ teeth) is not predictably available from private dentists and hygienists. Private practitioners don’t North Van. resident the letter are . have the time to devote to introducing a three-year-old to dentistry, or the “props”, or even (and especially) the child orientation. ~ “Because this service was more available to the lower economic group than private services it meant that more children had access to early, sound dental education than do now. If the service was ‘not used by. the lower economic group, surely it would be. more ad- vantageous to try to reach them than to discontinue the service. , “I understand that the program was financed by the school board, and. can ap- preciate the reluctance of the. public health ad- ministration to take it on during a time of budget squeeze. But surely dental hygiene education for pre- schoolers is a public health rather than a school board responsibility. I think that the public health ad- ministration should finance it, and should give it the - clinic space it needs. I am ' willing to pay my share of ‘the taxes to support it.” passed away HENRY GRIMWOOD of North Vancouver in his 66th year. Survived by his loving wife Joyce R.
