Tratticking in vision for tuiure Dear Editor: Aswe CHIiCr BOW CCAE ind Approgcn a new SCTE, would it be toa much te expect our political decision makers to focus on opportunt ties to bund our commruty's transportation infrastructure wisely and well enough te verve ous into the future, induding the 2010 Winter Olympics? Recently, North Vancouver District council decided) to mvite other North Shore councils, — Squamish and Whistler to discuss rail, road and waterways trinsportation issues arising fram the Vancouver/Whister bid for the 2010 Olympic Games, One of the suguestions is a rail tunnel to the North Shore as part of a fastrail link to Whistler. What a great idea it would be for everyone involved — including «Vancouver City Council and the Greater Vancouver Regional District's planners -- to tke another look at the transportation sdlution put forward in July 1993) by the late Hans Bentzen. Mr. Bentzen, who built the Massey Tunnel beneath the Fraser — River Vancouver, proposed a tunnel crossing, with six vehicle lanes and two tracks for light rail transit. In addition to meeting, the fast rail link North Vancouver District has discussed, the Rentzen tunnel would take commuter traffic out of Stanley Park and Vancouver's West End, deliver traffic efti- ciently between North Shore communities and downtown Vancouver, and ease conges- south of tion by taking through cratic tron Upper fevels directly to False Creek bridges. The Bentven tunnel solu non, which included ao vision Ay proposal to pay fer the project through the develop ment of anasland: Bis enurely feasible: Bcan be built without inter fering with existing trattic pat terns on Lions Gate and Second Narrows bridges; MH leaves the Lions Gate Bridge in place for use asa Courist attraction to carry pedestrians, bieveles and local traffic from the North Shore to Stanley Park, Band can be built with no interruption whatever in Port of Vancouver traffic and busi- Ness activity. What's aceded to make ita reality that will provide a fong- term transportation solution, including the Burrard crossing to meet the 201) Olympics nced, are political leaders with some vision and courage. Come to think of it, even with the impetus of a new cen- tury ahead, maybe we have to find new political leadership before we can expect that J. A.
