north shore news NEIGHBORHOODS Flumes bisected valley THE flumes construct- ed during the early days of the lumber industry on the North Shore were an inge- nious and awesome undertaking. The tion of the huge system -- about ten miles long, from above the Lynn Headwaters down to the sea near Moodvville — was particularly noteworthy considering that North Shore pioncers had primitive tools and equipment compared to today’s technology. The first flumes in Lynn Valley were built by the H.H. Spicer Shingle Company in 1895, when they were con- tracted by the Moodyville mill to cut shingle bolts. Flume: : constructed of wooden planks, first box- shaped, later V-shaped, about three feet wide, supported on X-shaped brackets, adjustable for releasing log jams. The flumes transported shinglebolts and smaller picces of wood down the stcep mountainside to the nearest lumber mill. James and Robert McNair bought out the Spicer opera- tion in 1897 and built the “upper” or first mill, just cast of Centre Road (Mountain Highway) berween present Dempsey Road and Coleman Surcer, The MeNairs ¢ the Hastings Shin Manutacturing Co. in 1903 to provide a readily available source of lumber to build the brackets, trestles and bridges to support the fime sestem.
