Sunday, March 30, 1997 — North Shore News — 21 Cutting edge in Edgemont By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer FRESH off a plane from Los Angeles, Joseph Maggi of Structure Hair Design has introduced the Edgemont Collection for summer. The = salon, located in Edgemont Village, is the joint concept of Maggi, the artistic director of the salon, and Leslea MacPhail, the managing, director. It opened in the area last September. The idea is te offer a full range of services adaptable to a broad mix of clients. And to use current British and European techniques for both cutting and color. In February Maggi was in L.A. for the Long Beach Hair Show, where he also had the opportunity to take courses and learn new techniques. He brought them back with him. The summer collection uses softer blocks and strips of color defined by sculpted hair — using the color to enhance, shadow and define the cut. And just as fashion is applying, a lay- ered look for new collections, the cuts are layered both in symmetric and asymmetric ‘overcuts. Maggi has chosen three cuts for the collection which include long and short hair lengths. Maggi said the techniques were already being used in Vancouver, but “in L.A. they were showing it in a more dra- matic way.” But will the concept fly in cosy little Edgemont Village? “We were really scared about opening here,” said Maggi, “but we chase the area on purpose.” Maggi and MacPhail saw the need in the village for a salon that caters to a younger, trendier crowd. Some of his older clients are “very modern or in film.” “We're very downtown,” said Maggi. Most of his clients do live in the area, but in the past have headed over the bridge to get the latest look. ” Right now, the accent is on an easy-to-maintain cut which can be revised for evening wear. The “street look” involves shadow and depth using hair color as makeup. It’s an example of a look that originated in a counter movement only to reappeat on thet runways in a more polished ion. : JOSEPH Maggi's Edgemont collection for hair applies cuts layered in symmetric and asymmetric overcuts. The color enhances, shadows ard defines the cut, by using softer blocks and strips oft color. f North. Vancouver.
