University stars to tee

OUTSTANDING univer-
sity stars Rob McMillan
and Ted Oh will be arriv-
ing at Mayfair Lakes for
the third-annual B.C. Tel
Pacific Open June 3-9
directly from next week’s
NCAA golf champi-
onships at Chattanooga,
Tennessee.

- The pair are just two of an
impressive field that will tee it
up at Mayfair Lakes in the

B.C, Tei Pacific Open, a
$125,000 championship cre-
ated to fill the B.C. Open
void.

Winnipeg native McMillan,
a sophomore at the University
of New Mexico (UNM), is a
three-time Canadian Junior
title-holder who placed second
to Trevor Dodds in the
Canadian Tour's 1995
Manitoba Open. Dodds, of
Namibia, led the tour with
almost $80,000 in winnings.

McMillan was a first-team
all-conference selection and
has been nominated for all-
American status. He was
UNM's number-one player
and ranked 10th in the nation
earlier in the season.
McMillan says he is look-
ing forward to retumning to
B.C. where he won one of his
national junior ‘itles in
Nanaimo. He also plans to
compete in the tour's Manitoba
Open again and the Canadian

Masters at Ancaster. Ontario.

Oh, of Torrance, Califor-
nia, is the 19-year-old
Korean-born phenom who in
1993 became the youngest
player ever to qualify for the
U.S. Open and Los Angeles
Open. He entered the B.C. Tel
Pacific Open last year, miss-
ing the 36-hole cut.

“My goal in my freshman
year was to win a tournament
and I accomplished that,”
says Oh of the top-ranked
University of Nevada/Las
Vegas.

An amateur hasn’t cap-
tured a major provincial open
since 1976 when Cec
Ferguson won the defunct
B.C. Open. He's now director

Woods, leads the contingent
of qualifying school grads.
He won the spring Q-school
qualifier at Morningstar in
Parksville with an 11-under
277 total after opening with

Canadian Tour graduates.
Tim Efferron and Scott
McCarron both played the
Tour and the B.C. Tel Pacific

his highest finish at the B.C.
Tel Pacific Open where he
finished tied for 10th.

The Canadian Tour con-
tinuously produces top PGA

More than 15,000 specta-
tors were in attendance last
year at the B.C. Tel Pacific
