Dear Editor: -Recent media attention about ground and inland search and rescue services has made it clear that the vol- unteers who deliver the search and rescue service can no longer continue to provide the free service without help from the general public, local municipalities and provincial government. The general public can help by using the trip plan form for ali outdoor activities. The! person fitls out the form and leaves it with a friend. If the person docs not return at the time specified on the form, then search and res- cue has an opportunity to search in the specific places stated in the form. In addition the pubiic can support the free search and rescue service by ensuring that their'elected officials are aware of the service and the needs of the voluntecrs who provide the service. Municipalities can help by reviewing the search and res- cue needs of their area/district with the local police, munici- pal coordinator, search and rescue team and regional manager. Together they can estab- lish an integrated supported response to. those needing assistance. es ‘ a The rere govern- ment together with the municipalities can help by ensuring that training courses are available to the search and rescue volunteers. The Ministry of the Attorney General established a search and rescue advisory to, amongst other things, advise the — Provincial Emergency Program on search and rescue policy and training. A recent recommendation by the committee to provide $70,000 for training for fiscal 1996-97 was rejected and countered with an offer of $18,000. Eighteen thousand dollars to train 4,250 Search and Rescue voiunteers? After fur- ther consideration, the pro- gram suggested the figure may be increased to $38,000. “Worth Vancouver City Library W2 West 14th St, Yorte Van.
