THE NORTH | Vancouver
Youth Band is now the “official
band” for the City and District
of North Vancouver.

Both city and district council
unanimously adopted motions last
week granting the honorary status,

District councillor Emig Crist.
whose son played for the band and
is now a world-class symphony
inusician, lobbied for the designa-
tion earlier this year,

The mater was referred to the
Arts Conmnission for a report.

The commission finally decided
that the honorary tide would sat
impact on future funding for the
band or other considerations such as
the provision of a permanent prac-
tice hall.

The commission noted that the
youth band has been an integral and
important. part of the North
Vancouver community since its
establishment in 1939,

Said the commission's report:
“The band’s contribution to the cul-
tural Jife of the North Shore and its
exemplary performances have been
recognized = througa numerous
awards and honors over its 56-year
history.

“In addition, the band provides a
unique opportunity for aver 120
youth members to perform locally

and internationally, on behalf of

North Vancouver's citizens.”

Junior band director Ron Smith
was happy with the designation.

“Tthink it’s fantastic.

“It's been a long time coming.”
Smith tald the News.

He hopes the designation will
get the band a Jithe more respect
when it comes to corporale
fundraising.
