WHEN MAUREEN Smiley heard from the grandmother of one of her students that conditions in
Central Children’s Hospital in Moscow were sub-standard — “some of the children don’t even have
beds,” she noted — the Hollyburn elementary school principal decided to act. Assisted by volunteer
parents, Grade 5 and 6 students have spent several lunch hours knitting scarves and toques for the
beleaguered tots. Raisa Kolesnokov (right) of the Orthodox Church of America will ship the finished
goods to Russia. Safeway, Wal-Mart and Trisha’s Wool Shop in Ambleside have already donated
. wool but more is needed — even scraps will do. Children’s toys, games and stuffed animals are algo
being collected and can be dropped off at the school weekdays, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Info: 981-1220.
