This.method encourages group music-making through singing, playing instruments and moving to music, using the natural thythms of children’s rhymes and chants. Through participation in creative games, songs and movement activities, the children develop skills such as singing in tune, learning melodic intervals and rhythi patterns, reading music, taking music dictation, recognizing Tiusical forms and playing instruments. Instrumental ensemble work is performed on non-pitched percussion (e.g. xylophone and glockenspiel) from toddlers through Grade 2. Recorder is incorporated in-Grade 2 Guitar from Age 7 Group classes in guitar are an extension of the Kodaly-Ort program, though there is no prerequisite to start. Three levels of instruction are currently being offered. Guilar classes are one hour Jong and havea low class maximum to ensure adequate attention for students. Strings for Young Children is a method that teaches the violin to children from age four. Beginners start in a small master class and then move on to an individual lesson in addition to the group ‘lesson. String teaching techniques are berrowed from the Suzuki Method, Some Kodaly-Orff activities are also incorporated into the group classes. While actual reading is not taught in the beginning stages, we do provide pre-reading activities in the group classes.
