Window Covering Association sponsored-contest NORTH SHORE interior designer Joni Mar of Design for Living beat out 19 other design and decorating firms from across the country to take first prize for the best living/dining room window caver- ing solution of 1993. The annual contest, spansored by the Window Covering Association of British Columbia, is designed to recognize and promote innovation and professionalism in the industry. It promotes excellence in design through solving creatively within a . Client's budget.and lifestyle con- cepts. The winning entry was an origi- nal Oriental-style valance created to tie together all the clements in the _ ¢lient’s North Vancouver living and ’ dining rooms. “The homeowner originally wanted balloon-style vatances,” said Mar. “She and her husband have many beautiful Asian artifacts and pieces of art. | recommended a . treatment more in keeping with the _ Style of their accessories. “The room demanded something more daring. f give a lot of credit to the client. She was open-minded and willing to take a gamble on something unique. “We-had been working together Tor some time renovating the rest of her home and had developed a high level of trust.” Mar says her philosophy is to work with her clients te help them execute their visions instead of imposing her style on them. “I'm here to guide them through _ the design process but ultimately they have to live with the results,” Mar launched her interior design consulting business a little over a year ago after making a dramatic career switch. For cight years she had been a television reporter for the CBC evening news. “H's not as radical a change as it may sound. The research and com- munication skills [ used as a reporter-are invaluable today to understand and meet my clients’ needs.” Mar has worked on many West color scheme, She has aso completed several similar commercial projects such as designing offices and restaurants. “Most people think hiring a designer is expensive, but f can usually save them from making costly mistakes.” In fact, Mar says her clients are often surprised at just how afford- able personalized consulting ser- vice and custom-made items are.
