Now how can Dave refuse,
hmmm? “The country is sick and
you're going to get it to hospital,’
cajoles Bob Alexander (Frank
Langella), the conniving chief-of-
staff.

Of course, he neglects to men- ©
tion it means running a few red
lights.

This finely tuned populist fairy
tale overcomes an unlikely
premise with Kevin Kline’s infec-
tious charm.

Langella makes a perfect villain,
and there's a Canadianesque ap-
pearance by Ben Kingsley as the
dutiful vice-president.

Charles Grodin is a credit as
Dave's crafty financial adviser who
quickly appraises the the govern-
ment's accounts and finds that
what they lack in accuracy, they
make up for in creativity.

Sigourney Weaver makes the
most of her limited but pivotal role
as a compassionate First Lady who
inspires Dave to help the
homeless.

Unfortunately, their romantic
subplot loses votes when it
declines into saccharinicity.

The age-old mistaken identity is
certainly well-mined territory but
here director Ivan Reitman and
writer Gary Ross strike gold —
well, silver at least.
